KENYA (Northern District) 4WD ADVENTURE SAFARI

1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – Samburu
Early departure from Nairobi and travel North to Nanyuki. We will stop before Nanyuki, on the slopes of Mount Kenya to have lunch at the Trout Tree Restaurant, before continuing to Isiolo. Here we abandon the tarmac for the hard corrugation road heading to Marsabit, but we will only follow it for 40 Kms or so, before entering the game park. Soon we will set camp for the night on the banks of the Ewaso and it is time for sundowners and our first dinner under the incandescent equatorial sky.

2: Samburu National Park
Morning and afternoon game drives in the park.

3: Samburu – Wamba Elbunique
Early breakfast, wrap camp and exit Samburu by the West gate. The track is smooth and wriggles itself through thick bush as we head out of the basin. The views are now endless… we are slightly high… behind us the Laikipia escarpment dominates the basin dotted Samburu warrior with small volcanoes and characterized by lines of acacias along the laggas. Ahead, our track disappears in the horizon. A brief stop in Wamba, on the south western side of the Matthews Range, to buy chewing Tobacco, a much appreciated gift to the elders we will meet ‘en route’.

4: Elbunique – Barsaloi – Baragoi – Illaut Ngurunit
Valleys and hills will subside each other through the day. By mid afternoon we will abandon the road to South Horr for a dried up river bed that contours the Ndotos range towards Illaut. This is still Samburu country, bordering Rendille country.

5: Ngurunit – Kaisut Desert – Kalacha
We are heading straight north, lifting a cloud of white dust behind us. In the distance a vision of a camel caravan dissolves itself between the skyline and the horizon. The air is dry, the heat intense. For lunch we’ll have to improvise a tarpaulin between our vehicles for a little shade, for the temperature is above forty-degree Celsius….Kalacha, an oasis in the middle of the desert and main water point for the Gabbra. This is our set for the night.

6: Kalacha – Chalbi Desert – North Horr Loiyangalani
Gabbra, Borana or Somali warriors escorting their large herds of camels in search of pastures, regularly cross this part of the world. We drive on…A cold beer and lunch awaits us at the Oasis Lodge in Loiyangalani. As well as a relaxing afternoon by the warm pool, the breeze singing through the palms in this magical location will allow you a little time to take in the days behind. By now you do not know what happened when or where.

7: Loiyangalani
Day in Loiyangalani

8: Loiyangalani Maralal
We are on the road again driving south on the rift Valley through constantly changing scenery. We will cross the towns of South Horr, Baragoi, Marti and Barsaloi before starting to climb towards the Maralal plateau. The night will be chilly.

9: Maralal – Baringo Bogoria
Still heading straight South… past Lake Baringo and its musky brown water… Bogoria is not far now. By lunch we will set camp under a giant fig tree, overlooking the lake and its rich bird life.

10: Bogoria – Mau Escarpment Masai Mara
We are now leaving behind the open spaces of the North. Sisal plantations before the town of Nakuru, wheat and pyrethrum on the Mau escarpment…and soon the rolling plains of the Mara.

11: Masai Mara
Morning and afternoon game drives in the park.

12: Masai Mara – Nairobi
Well… our safari is now coming to an end… We drive back to Nairobi where you have day rooms to freshen up before dinner at Carnivore… and your transfer to JKIA airport for your return flight home, unless…
