01. FRI. Arrival in Addis Ababa. Transfer to the chosen hotel. Have a free morning. Afternoon (1400 hrs from the hotel) tour of the capital: visit Entoto mountain with views over the capital, the National & the Ethnographic museums, St George church and the Mercato, biggest open air market in Africa.
Meals free. ON (overnight) hotel.

02. Transfer from the hotel to the airport for the flight to Axum, 2 hrs before the flight time (meet your driver at your hotel). Ones in Axum transfer to the hotel for check-in.
Visit the steles, St Mary of Tsion church (where legend says the Ark of Covenant is deposited), the bath and the palace of Queen of Sheba, and archeological sites.
Breakfast can be at the airport or in Axum. Lunch and dinner at the hotel in Axum.

03. Leave your hotel at 08am to drive to Mekele, capital of the Tigray region. On the way make very interesting visits, as: the Yeha pre-Christian temple, DebreDamo monastery (where to reach the monastery men have to climb 16 meters by ropes. Women are not allowed) and one of the Tigray rock churches, as Abreha We Atsbeha or Wikro Cherkos (or could be both, if clients prefer not to visit DebreDamo).

04. Leave your hotel at 08am to drive to Lalibela, crossing sites as Ambalagi, Alamata, Dild & the Tekeze river, with very nice views and admiring the Tigray, Azebo/ Raya, Afar (with luck around Woldya) & Wollo people on the way.
Spot also the endemic Gelada Baboons around Dild.

05. Full day visit of the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, defined as the 8th wonder in the world. Churches built in the 12th century; the African Jerusalem.
And late afternoon take part of the coffee ceremony in a traditional house or the hotel (the coffee ceremony in an important part of Ethiopian culture).

06. Leave your hotel at 08am to drive to Gondar, the city of castes and churches, defined the African Camelot, admiring very nice views over the Semien mountains.

08. Leave your hotel at 08am to drive to admire the Blue Nile falls.

Afternoon have a boat excursion on lake Tana to admire some monasteries over the lake’s islands, as Asua Mariam and Ura Kidane Mehret, with also the visit of an Amhara people village & coffee plantations.

09. SAT. Transfer from the hotel to the airport for the flight to Addis Ababa, 2 hrs before the flight schedule. Ones reached Addis Ababa transfer to the hotel for a day use room available till 18:00 hrs. Have your free afternoon.
Lunch free. Have dinner invited in a traditional restaurant with folkloristic dances. Then transfer to the airport for departure (or if the flight is next day, have an overnight in Addis Ababa. The next day you’ll be picked up from your hotel 3 hrs before your flight and transferred at the airport)

10. SUN. Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport. Please issue your visa at the Immigration Desk (50 US per person), get your luggage and go through customs. There your driver will wait for you and will take you to Tarangire National Park. To the gate it will take you around 3 hours drive. Do a first game drive along the shores of Lake Manyara. This park impresses by the big Lake and the thick forest. You will find Impalas and Dik Diks as well as hippos and elephants. Take care of the lions in the park, sometimes they are laying in the trees and inspect their surroundings. After the game drives proceed for dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Lake Manyara National Park Information:The Lake Manyara National Park has a rare ground water forest, which merges into grassland with acacia trees and open grassland. On the shores of Lake Manyara are marshy areas. In the park live about 20-30 lions, who like to rest are particularly on the trees, a few leopards and monkeys. Prevalent in the park are giraffes, impalas, wildebeests, zebras, hippos and big herds of buffalo.
Things to do nearby the park: Cultural excursions, bicycle tours, forest walks outside the park
Best time to visit: July to October: large mammals

11. Mto wa Mbu cultural excursion. After breakfast go on a bicycle ride on the edge of Lake Manyara National Park. You will see the animals from a different perspective and discover things, you would have never seen from the car. For lunch enjoy a local meal under banana tree and get ready for a guided walk through the village. There you will see how the farmers plant their crops and how craftsmen produce their goods.

12. Ngorongoro Crater Tour – Karatu. Today you will do an unforgettable Ngorongoro Crater Tour. At the beginning you will descend into the crater – 600m from the rim to the floor. When you reach the bottom, start your game drive and discover this breathtaking landscape. Wildebeests, zebras and lions will cross your way. Enjoy your picnic lunch next to the hippo pool. After the game drive ascend the steep crater wall with the safari car and return back to the lodge.
Ngorongoro Crater Information: The Ngorongoro conservation area is located between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. Within the protected area is the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the largest caldera in the world. The crater is 600m deep and 260 square km in size and offers the diversity of East African scenery and wildlife in a confined space. Enjoy the breathtaking views at sunset from one of the lodges on the crater rim.

13. After breakfast proceed to Serengeti National Park. On the way you can visit Olduvai Gorge and get more information about this National Park at Naabi Hill Gate. Game en route to lodge.
Serengeti National Park Information: The Serengeti is a treeless savanna, which extend from the north Tanzania, east of Lake Victoria, to southern Kenya (Africa) extends and covers an area of about 30,000 sq km. There live more than 1.6 million herbivores and thousands of predators. Common animals in this region are wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalo. A unique experience is the migration taking place every year between the Sernegeti and the Masai Mara.
The word “Serengeti” is derived from the Maasai language and means “Wide area / high level.” You can find extensive, flat grasslands in the south and slightly wooded plains in the north. The central Serengeti is an almost treeless savanna. In the southeast arises Ngorongoro Conservation Area (world heritage site since 1979). The highest mountains are located about 1,850 m above sea level, lower parts of the savannah to reach “down” to about 950 m.
The region encompasses the Serengeti “Serengeti National Park”. With its 14,763 km ² it is one of the largest and certainly the best known National parks in the world. Since 1981 it is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
The documentary film “Serengeti Shall Not Die” by Bernhard Grzimek was honored in 1960 with the Oscar.

15. Serengeti – Tarangire National Park. Today you will leave Serengeti National Park. Do an early game drive in the morning and proceed towards Ngorongoro and go on until you reach Tarangire National Park. Game en route.
Tarangire National Park Information: Tarangire National Park is one of 11 national parks in Tanzania. It is located south-west of Arusha in the Lake Manyara region. The Tarangire River flows through the park even in the dry season and is the only water source for the wildlife. Therefore, the wildlife in the park is very rich dring dry sesaon. The landscape consists of savannah and the river. The park is 2600 square kms and is located on 900m altitude. Furthermore the park is well known for its uncountable baobab trees, the large number of elephants and various species of birds. Best time to visit: Throughout the year (June – September high animal density because of dry season)

16. For the last day on safari do an early morning game drive in Tarangire National Park and leave towards Arusha. Here then either transfer to catch your flight or stay a night in Arusha.

03. Morning drive to Chencha, for the Dorze people, with their unique houses and traditions. 04. Leave your hotel around 0730 am & drive to Jinka. See on the way the Konso, Derase, Tsemay, Ari and Benna people. Make a stop for the visit of a Konso people village, which are famous for the terracing agriculture, and have particular traditions. 09. SAT. Drive to Dimeka village, to admire the colorful Hamer, Karo and Dassanech people market at Dimeka village. Ones the market is done, have a full day for the Hamer people. UGANDA GLU 101. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania Safari

TREKKING PROGRAM Trekking with Ari and Mursi people

1: Bako people – Dell
The Ari people are divided in 10 tribes, which are the Gofa, Bako, Biyo, Galila, Laydo, Seyki, Shangama, Sido, Wubahamer, and Zeddo. In our trekking we are going the visit their cultural diversity and way of life.
And we’ll reach till the Mursi people, where women for beauty use to put lips into their plates and men have different scarification and ornament all over their body. With luck we’lls ee also the donga game (ritual stick fighting. Bit depend on the season)

Early morning departure and start our trekking thought the Bako tribe for all the day. After almost two hours walking in this beautiful vegetation we reach the village of Senegal. Short break to have some time watching women cutting the false banana leaves and preparing the Kotcho, traditional bread. We can also see people working the land, if is the right season. Continuing walking till lunch time where we stop at Bako.
Departure to reach Dell. We can see many species of birds, in this are we can find more than 280 species. All the time we are walking at an average altitude of 2100 mts, that’s why of this lush vegetation and cold air.
Reach the village of Dell for overnight in camp and dinner by our cook.

2: Shangama tribe – Debre Tsehay
Today we are trekking in the Shangama tribe. As yesterday early departure, from Dell, through these population. As usual we are welcomed, in the villages we visit, by many running children. The Ari usually has a lot of children. The old people usually welcome by inviting us to their
assembly. On the way we can see some Colobus Monkeys. We are having lunch at the outskirt of the village of Disho. In the afternoon we continue to reach the village Debre Tsehay through this land of marvels. High trees are making shade from the sun. A lot of these are endemic to Ethiopia and particularly to these regions. Some of them could be Juniper, Cordia africania, Acacia and the common eucalyptus. Camp and overnight at Debre Tsehay.

3: Shangama tribe – Meizer
Departure from Debre Tsehay through the Shangama tribe area. You are used to the best type of vegetation. The highland altitude vegetation of this area is very particular due also to the latitude is placed. These people grow also a lot of different type of spices. The people of these days are of Omotic origins and with a body carved by the fatigue of
working the land. All of them are farmers and really very hard working people. You will be amazed by their social life; women and men are working the all day. At night are resting. Although this entire work and hardship people is always happy and welcoming. We will walk for about four hours with many stops to admire the scenery that this track offers us. Stop for lunch at the village of Shangama Bili. Departure after a recharging rest to reach the village of Meizer where we will stop for overnight and dinner.

4: Balamer tribe area – Ari people
Leave at early morning through the Balamer tribe area. As usual admiring the best landscapes. We are finding always a different type of approach from the villagers as we change altitude and way of life. We are now proceeding to the Mursi land. The area is still as the one we have visited in the previous days. We will walk as usual for the all morning to reach the lunch place in this beautiful savannah. In the afternoon walking in this wonderful landscape to reach the village of Balamer for overnight and dinner. This is the last big village we visit of the Ari people. If market day, Saturday, we can see all this tribes at the market. Tomorrow we will be in Mursi area.

5: Mursi people
Today we will encounter a new tribe; the Mursi. The morning will be still in the Ari’s area most specifically in the Balamer tribe. We are also walking to the lowland. The vegetation will change from highland mountainous to the acacia lowland vegetation. The difference will be amazing. Stopover for lunch on the beach under big trees of the Maki River. Continue to reach Maki Mursi for overnight and dinner. We are now in the Mursi are which are famous for their body scarification. These tribes are semi nomads. They travel with their cattle to different area for water. Are of Nilotic origins and the women use to place clay plates in their lower lip. If lucky we can participate to a Donga game, a stick battle to identify the winner that will be respected by all the young men of the village. Dinner and overnight at Maki Mursi.

Arrival in Addis Collect Visa for Somaliland &drive to Awash Upon arrival you will be welcomed by Green Land Tour’s staff. After receiving your Visa to Somaliland you will start your drive to Awash. Awash is located in the central rift valley of Ethiopia. Named after one of the biggest river in the country this area is settled by the pastoral
people of Kereyu and Afar. It also inhabits the first National Park of Ethiopia called Awash National Park; an afternoon game drive will reward you with spotting some of the wild mammals and avifauna of the country. The river passing through the park also makes a dramatic fall which is accessible to the spot where you can feel the mist of the water.

2: Awash – Dire Dawa
A self administrative town of Dire Dawa is founded following the construction of the trail ways which extends from Addis Ababa to Djibouti. This town as a result was once on top of trade and goods transporting business. Though that time passed, this town is still enjoyable for the harmonious style of living of Nations and Nationalities of the country. Few minutes before you reach Dire Dawa you will stop to visit Loga Oda an ancient archeological site admired for its old cave paintings which depicts the cultural heritage of the people who lived 7000 years before.

3: Dire Dawa – Harar
A morning drive to The Walled Town of Harar will take you through some colorful towns like Alamaya and Aweday. The town of Aweday is a spot where the best quality of ‘Chat’ a stimulating plant is produced and centralized for local and international markets. An afternoon visit of Harar will include a museum, cultural houses, the house of Arthur Ramous a one time famous French poet and the show of the hyena man.

4: Harar – Togochale
To escape the temperature which normally raises at this area an early morning start is advisable. You will drive admiring some of the amazing land escapes of Dakota hill at Babille and later the flatter stretches of the law land area.Togochale is where Ethiopian Emigration office is found so you will be expected to clarify your Visa to the Somali land. Then lately to Harghessa.

5: Harghessa – Burao
Minutes drive out of Hargeisa will take you to Laas Gaal caves. Famous for their rock art, the caves are located in a rural area on the outskirts of Hargeisa, and contain some of the earliest known cave paintings in the Horn of Africa and the African continent in general. Laas Gaal’s rock art is estimated to date back to somewhere between9000-8000 and 3000BCE.The rest of the day you will drive enjoying the scarcely populated part of the Somali land with camels grazing.

6: Burao – Barbera
This day you will drive North West of Burao to reach Berbera. What you will experience will be the nomadic life of the Somali people with their camels and goats grazing the desert shereb.

7: Exploring Berbera for a day
As to The British explorer Richard Burton Berberah is the true key of the Red Sea, the centre of East African traffic, and the only safe place for shipping upon the western Eritrean shore. Backed by lands capable of cultivation, and by hills covered with pine and other valuable trees, and enjoying a comparatively temperate climate Berbera is a seaport, with the only sheltered harbor on the south side of the Gulf of Aden.

8: Berbera – Hargessa
Hargessa is the capital of the Somaliland with a population of approximately 1.3 million. It was the colonial capital of British Somaliland from 1941 to 1960 when it gained independence as the State of Somaliland and united with Italian Somaliland. Now this town is seen with the bad rewards of the unsettled situation in which the country stayed in.

9: Hargessa – Jijiga
Back to Jijiga through Togochalle. Jijiga is a place where you can compare and contrast the Ethiopian Somalia’s and Somaliland’s in respect to culture.

ETHIOPIA NORTH-WEST The undiscovered people of the North-west

1: Addis Ababa
Arrival Addis Ababa. Meet the guide at the airport. Transfer hotel. Rest. Afternoon tour of Addis. ON htl

Drive to the Debre Libanos monastery, the old Portuguese bridge and Jamma river valley. Proceed then crossing the Blue Nile valley to Bahirdar. ON htl

Morning drive to admire the Blue Nile falls. Afternoon boat on lake Tana, to admire 2-3 churches over its islands, as Ura Kidane Mehret, Mahal Zeghie and Asua Mariam. ON htl

We propose this day to be SAT. Drive to Kossober (150 kms, 2 hrs) to visit the Gojam and Agew people market. Then proceed to Chagni (60 km, 1 hrs) and Mandura (67 km, 1 hr) to admire another colorful market, this time of the Gumze and Agew people. Then drive back to Zengena lake for ON camping

SUN. Drive to Dahans Baguna to admire a Gumze & Agew people market. Then proceed to very nice and traditional Agew people villages. Reach then the Blue Nile. And ON camping at Shinashia, at a Agew people village.

Proceed to Guba (or also called Mankush) village, where you find also a previous palace of Dej Asmach Jemal, built during Emperor Menelik reign. Reach so Janga where you can admire the Blue Nile, (189 kms, 4 hrs). Proceed so to Sherkole where you can admire the Berta people, traditional gold miners, at work. (2 hrs drive). Then continue for the overnight at Asosa, at Mango campsite, among lot of Mango trees

Morning dedicated to the visit of the Ganzo people. Then proceed to Asosa. On the way make a 1 hrs trek at Inzi, for very nice views over the region). ON Mango campsite

Drive to Nekemte (341 kms, 8 hrs). On the way visit very nice views and Wollo people resettlements.

Drive back to Addis Ababa. Ones in Addis, short visit of the Mercato, biggest open air market in Africa. Dinner in traditional restaurant with folkloristic dances. Then transfer airport for departure
